Elizabeth I. Brown Scholarship Fund


In partnership with the North Valley Community Foundation,

Altacal Audubon Society is offering scholarships to local youth and students.


Elizabeth I. Brown Scholarship Fund Mission Statement

To encourage our youth to become stewards of the environment, natural areas, and wild birds and animals; to assist them in learning about the interconnectedness and interdependency of all living species and their habitats; and to inspire them to use their skills and knowledge to protect birds and other animals, and protect or enhance essential habitats.


There are three categories of scholarships:

  • High School Student Scholarships

    For High School Students interested in Natural and Environmental Sciences:

    Three $1,000 scholarships will be offered each year.


    Eligible applicants must be:

    •     Graduating public high school in Butte, Glenn, or Tehama counties
    •     Enrolling in an accredited California college or university
    •     Pursuing a degree in the natural or environmental sciences (ornithology, wildlife, habitat studies, ecology, conservation, earth sciences, environmental sciences, etc.)

    Applicants must provide:

    1.  Two letters of recommendation from non-relatives.
    2.  Essay: Please attach an essay of no more than one page describing how your educational goals relate to the Mission Statement of the fund.

    To encourage our youth to become stewards of the environment, natural areas, and wild birds and animals; to assist them in learning about the interconnectedness and interdependency of all living species and their habitats, and to inspire them to use their skills and knowledge to protect birds and other animals, and protect or enhance essential habitats.

  • College Student Scholarships

    For College Students studying Natural and Environmental Sciences:

    Two $2,000 scholarships will be offered each year.


    Eligible applicants must be:

    •     A graduate of a public high school in Butte, Glenn, or Tehama counties
    •     Entering their junior or senior undergraduate year or enrolled as a graduate student at a California college or university
    •     Pursuing a degree in the natural or environmental sciences (ornithology, wildlife management, habitat studies, ecology, conservation, earth sciences, environmental sciences)
    • A resident of Butte, Glenn, or Tehama counties

    Applicants must provide:

    •  Essay: describing how your educational goals relate to the Mission Statement of the fund (1 page max)
    • Two letters of recommendation from non-relatives

  • Camperships

    Altacal Audubon Elizabeth I. Brown Scholarship for Summer Camps 


    Altacal has provided $8500 in "campership" funds to help pay camp registration for children in need to attend one of six incredible local outdoor camps.


     Participating Bird & Nature Summer Camps:

    Eligible applicants must be:

    •  Between the ages of 8 and 18
    •  Applying to one of the abovementioned summer camps focused on birding and/or nature
    •  A resident of Butte, Glenn, or Tehama counties

    Reach out to these camps directly to inquire about obtaining a scholarship to send your child to their outdoor camp.

 Altacal Audubon hopes to encourage our local youth to become stewards of the environment by providing scholarships for their continuing education in one of the natural or environmental sciences or for Bird/Nature Camps. While our organization focuses on birds, we know that everything on this earth is connected, often in ways we do not see or understand. We hope that our scholarships will help students gain knowledge and skills that will allow them to help protect the birds, animals, and environment.
